EFECT: A Coaching Framework for Leaders Who Coach

EFECT is a coaching framework designed with leaders in mind. Each stage of EFECT moves the conversation along a path from framing an issue to ideating solutions. The process is grounded in meaningful engagement, co-developed with the employees you coach.

Engage

Is about engaging your aochee in a coaching conversation. This includes agreeing on the goals for the conversation, clarifying your respective expectations and establishing safety and trust

Frame

Involves framing the problems or issues that the coachee is grappling with. Identifying the actual issue and framing it in a clear and succinct way supports the exploration of potential courses of action, which brings us to the next stage - explore

Explore

You and your coachee start exploring potential courses of action or solutions to the problem you have just framed. By expanding the coachee’s perspective about the problem, you can help them widen the field of potential solutions they consider

Commit

You help the coachee select and focus on a specific course of action, commit to it, and plan its implementation. Committing to a course of action requires intention and attention as you both carefully consider the possible consequences of each potential course of action and plan accordingly

Test

The coachee executes the course of action they chose during the Commit stage. We call this stage “Test” because it is about testing the hypothesis that the chosen course of action will result in the desired outcome. Testing the effectiveness of the selected course of action requires grounding ideas in action plans in taking concrete actions

EFECT is Iterative

The process of EFECT is iterative:  once action is taken, you and your coachee will re-Engage to assess the outcomes of this action, whether it achieved the desired goal, glean insights about what worked and what did not, and plan the next steps
